When Kat Salvador; a professional dancer and lifelong performer was first asked to join a burlesque troupe, her initial response was a knee-jerk “No.” Like many others, she believed that burlesque was simply about stripping down, not understanding that the centuries-old art is really about self expression, storytelling, and empowerment.
Fast forward a decade, and Kat is now one of the most visible and respected teachers of burlesque here in South Georgian Bay. Kat’s Meow Beautiful Burlesque has grown into a staple of the region, and her weekly classes at The Dance Room in Stayner are one of her most popular offerings.
The class themes change monthly, with May devoted to burlesque in the Broadway style. Classes are beginner friendly and open to anyone looking to learn new dance skills, regain confidence in themselves and their body, and of course, have fun.
Kat remarks that many of her students are women navigating significant life changes like divorce that impact their self esteem and affect their sense of identity. Through her classes, these same women gain renewed appreciation and love for themselves, and that energy translates to other aspects of their lives.
