The Climate Action Team and Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach teamed up with Georgian Bay Forever to host a community cleanup of the shoreline. The clean up has become an annual tradition with hundreds of volunteers taking part to help to beautify the Beach. This year, the event doubled as an opportunity to launch LitterLotto, a waste reduction app designed to gamify proper trash disposal.
LitterLotto has been active in the UK for a number of years where it successfully curbed littering by a staggering 264% nationwide. The app rewards high performing waste collectors with prizes such as gift cards and merchandise, all while tracking the efforts to reduce littering across regions. When environmental activist John Scott learned about it, he and his partner made it their mission to bring this program to Canada. The shores of Georgian Bay are the first Canadian location to be adopt the concept.
The shoreline from Parry Sound to Tobermory and parts of the Bruce Peninsula have all been geo-fenced by the app developers. No anytime app users upload shots of their trash disposal to the app, the information is accurately recorded and the impact of the program can be tracked.
