When the National Trust of Canada marked July 11th-20th as Historic Places Days; a time for local communities across Canada to showcase their unique heritage and history, the Collingwood Museum was eager to participate. With this year’s theme revolving around art, craft, and storytelling that celebrates town heritage, creating a historic walking tour through the downtown core highlighting the impressive public art on display was a natural fit.
The free tours are open to all, and the museum hopes to see a fair number of visitors from out of town participate since one of the primary goals of Historic Places Days is to encourage people to learn more about towns, cities, and communities that they do not call home. The tours depart from the Collingwood Museum and span a 2 kilometre loop, and from end-to-end the experience is approximately one hour long. Participants will be led by historian and Museum Education Programmer Hilary Wilson, who will share information and stories on Collingwood’s history, explain the context and significance of the public art along the tour route, and help connect the town’s past with its present. The tours are running at 2pm and 7pm and registration is not required.
