When Duntroon Highlands owners Martin Rydlo and Stacie Smith were hiking in Arkansas, they were unexpectedly inspired. Stationed along the trails they explored were beautiful and intricate art installations which added interest and sparked imagination throughout their trek. By the end of the trip, the pair was determined to recreate the experience at Duntroon, and the Art & Tree Trail was born.
The two-kilometre trail features seven installations all created by Ontario-based artists; several of whom are local to South Georgian Bay. The pieces all aim to unite art with nature but utilizing up-cycled material, complementing the landscape, and highlighting the natural beauty of the escarpment.
The Art & Tree Trail is free to walk, however there is a suggested $10 donation. Interested walkers are asked to check in at the golf pro shop to pick up their trail maps and alert the staff of their presence, and from there folks are free to explore at their leisure. The initiative aims to promote physical and mental wellness by getting people active while spending time in nature, all while appreciating the impressive work of some of the area’s local artists.
