Cross country ski and orienteering enthusiasts gathered together for a ski orienteering race at Highlands Nordic. The race, put on by the national orienteering club DontGetLost Adventure Running, was organized as a trial event as DontGetLost co-founder and race course setter Mark Tarnopolsky sets his sights on bidding to host a Masters level event in the near future. Should the bid be successful, Highlands Nordic will welcome ski orienteers from around the world to compete for major titles and championships, and will effectively put South Georgian Bay on the map as a world class ski orienteering destination.
The sport is immensely popular globally, with a high concentration of athletes living and racing in Europe. Tarnopolsky hopes to attract this caliber of athlete to South Georgian Bay, and so far he is off to a good start. This particular event registered 30 competitors, including the Canadian national champions for both women’s and women’s orienteering.
The race was held in the afternoon on Saturday, February 8th. Competitors chose between a long and a short course option, and for many, it was their first time visiting Highlands Nordic.
