“We do more than put the we’re stuff on the red stuff.”
Firefighter and President of the Stayner Firefighters Association James Kenny is proud of the work that his team does for the community. Part of firefighting is spreading goodwill and providing ancillary support to the region, and while their initiatives are running all year long, the annual Car Wash and Barbecue continues to be one of their most successful projects.
Every summer, the Firefighters Association outfits Station 1 in Stayner with all the makings for a great fundraiser. The large station bays are transformed into efficient car wash facilities, the team sets up a barbecue and snack bar, and the fire tracks are out for tours and photos. The car wash raises funds for different initiatives, but for the past few years, the team has founder great success in their Gifts of Groceries campaign which services underprivileged families living in Clearview township. The funds are distributed to around twenty families nominated by the community based on their level of need, and from there the families receive grocery gift cards and care hampers just in time for the holiday season.
All members of the Firefighters Association volunteer their time for the event, eager to give back to the community they serve. Folks who participate in the car wash are happy to do so, citing their appreciation for the work that the firefighters do along with their enthusiasm for getting the chance to mix and mingle with the team.
