For South Georgian Bay residents living with intellectual disabilities, the Collingwood and area branch of Special Olympics Ontario is a lifeline. The organization provides athletes with special needs the access, training, and resources to pursue a variety of sports and athletics to foster healthy living, social interaction, and self confidence. Many of the athletes participating in the program represent their club on both provincial and national competition stages, and many compete in multiple sports over the course of each year.
The Walk-A-Thon welcomed 35 athletes and volunteers to the Wasaga Stars Arena for a day of fundraising, camaraderie, and friendly competition as teams worked together to stack the most laps around the walking track. The event exceeded fundraising expectations, with an original goal of $3000 being more than doubled even before the Walk-A-Thon kicked off. The funding will be used to send athletes to competitions around the province and beyond, cover facility and equipment rental fees, and support additional costs like transportation.
