Hill Grooming at Blue
1m 19s
When the ski hills open, Blue Mountain’s snowmaking and grooming teams are in action 24/7. With 375 acres of usable territory, snow groomers work long into the night correcting imperfections that have accumulated from the day’s activity, addressing larger issues like massive mounds or bare patches, and smoothing every surface until each run achieves the desired “corduroy” consistency.
While crews working on the North side are able to start as early as 4:30 each afternoon since the North does not remain open for night skiing, all other crews set out at 9:30pm after Ski Patrol has cleared the hill of all skiers and riders. From there, the groomers head out to survey each run and get them in top shape for the next morning.
Along with the groomers in their impressive snow cat and winch cat machines, crews are also out servicing the terrain parks by hand in small teams. These teams install obstacles and features like rails and pipes, and work together to building up landing and takeoff areas to keep free style enthusiasts safe and happy.
