The New Farm Centre in Creemore is a not-for-profit farm dedicated to promoting regenerative agriculture and reducing barriers to access fresh, quality produce. For the past 16 years, the farm has hosted Farms for Change, a large scale fundraiser that enables the organization to donate around $200 000 worth of fresh food throughout the growing season.
Farms for Change began as a revenue-generating strategy while The New Farm Centre was in its infancy. High end restaurants from across South Georgian Bay and Toronto that regularly purchased produce from the farm were invited to cook for event attendees, and musicians were invited to perform in the barn. The first year brought in $20 000 and it's been growing ever since.
Farm co-owner Brent Preston believes that reducing barriers to access fresh, high quality food can help solve a variety of issues from human health to climate change. He's passionate about doing his part to provide solutions. Through The New Farm Centre’s efforts, over 30 good food organizations across the province are supplied with regular deliveries of produce. Not only does this support the farm’s mission, it addresses the growing food insecurity crisis the province is facing.
According to Public Health Ontario, 16% of Ontarians are unable to access nutritious food on a regular basis. There is a growing reliance on food banks and good food providers, and these organizations cannot function without contributions from providers like The New Farm Centre.
